P1 Certification – Towbar and Coupling Installation

Autocert provides mobile P1 modification inspections and certification for heavy vehicle towbars and couplings across Greater Brisbane. We ensure your installation meets the strict requirements of ADR 62 and VSB6 Section P.

What Is a P1 Certification?

The P1 modification code applies to the installation, modification, or upgrade of towbars, couplings, and drawbars on vehicles other than those using fifth wheels or kingpins. This certification ensures:
  • The coupling and mounting components are safe, compliant, and correctly rated
  • Safety chains and attachment points are fitted to standard
  • The installation meets all relevant ADRs and engineering practices

What Is Covered?

  • ✅ Installation of tow couplings (e.g. 50 mm ball, pin-type, hook-type couplings)
  • ✅ Selection and mounting of towbars and brackets
  • ✅ Drawbar and drawbar eye design and welding
  • ✅ Safety chains and attachment points
  • ✅ Trailer electrical connectors (excluding ABS)
  • ✅ Upgrades, replacements, or rating changes to existing components

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Initial Consultation: We assess your vehicle, application, and towing configuration to determine the appropriate coupling setup and load ratings.
  2. Compliance Check: Installation must meet design requirements from ADR 62/.., AS4177, AS/NZS 4968, and VSB6 Section P. We'll verify: - Correct D-value and V-value ratings - Mounting strength and bolt grades - Welding to AS/NZS 1554.1:2011 - Safety chain installation and marking
  3. Inspection & Certification: A qualified P1 AVE performs the inspection using a detailed checklist. If compliant, we issue the: - P1 Modification Certificate - Modification Plate (stamped) - Compliance report for TMR
  4. Update Registration: The vehicle owner submits the documentation to TMR to officially record the modification.

Why It Matters

Improperly installed or non-compliant couplings can:
  • Fail under load or braking
  • Render a vehicle unroadworthy
  • Void insurance and registration
All couplings and towbars must comply with ADR 62/.. and be correctly marked with rating, type, and manufacturer identification.

Typical Applications

  • Heavy-duty trucks with upgraded or replacement towbars
  • Converter dollies and pig/dog trailers
  • Custom vehicle builds requiring new drawbars or eye-welds
  • 50 mm ball coupling installations or load rating updates
