✅ LM1 Fuel Tank Alteration – Compliance in Queensland

Thinking of installing an aftermarket fuel tank or surge tank on your vehicle?
Autocert is an Approved Person in Queensland authorised to assess and certify fuel tank alterations under Code LM1 of the National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Construction and Modification (VSB14).


🔧 What is Covered Under LM1?

Code LM1 applies to light vehicles (non-motorcycle, non-L-group) and includes:

  • ✅ Installation of alternative or aftermarket fuel tanks
  • ✅ Installation of fuel surge tanks

Note: This code does NOT cover gas system installations. Contact a licensed gas fitter for LPG or Natural Gas systems.


⚠️ When is Certification Required?

You’ll need LM1 certification if:

  • You’ve installed a replacement or auxiliary fuel tank
  • You’ve modified your factory tank's size, location, or mounts
  • You’ve added a fuel surge tank to support performance or off-road use

📋 LM1 Certification Checklist Includes:

  • ✔️ Proper material and secure mounting of fuel lines
  • ✔️ Tank clearance: minimum 100mm from bodywork and road
  • ✔️ Safe filler location and spill control
  • ✔️ No contact with the road when tyres are deflated
  • ✔️ ADR compliance for emissions, crashworthiness, and layout
  • ✔️ Evaporative control systems retained (if fitted)
  • ✔️ Sealed apertures to prevent cabin fumes
  • ✔️ Record-keeping and full inspection by a signatory

📍LM1 Certification Process

  1. Pre-Inspection – Confirm vehicle and tank layout meets basic requirements
  2. Modification Review – Check install method, fuel line routing, shielding, and emissions system
  3. Roadworthiness Check – Ensure handling, safety, and performance remain intact
  4. Certification – Issue LM1 certificate and fit modification plate
